By The Chosen of Sigmar

Prequel:

Since to be in the ranking you have to play at least one tournament in the other land (Belgium or Netherlands) I had entered the tournament in Goes. After a long ride (certain spots in the Netherlands actually smell like cheese) we (three members of the Knights of Bayard and me) arrived at the Fantasy store where the tournament was to be held.

The tables:

What really amazed me was that most tables had some scenery in the corners but that most  of the table was open ground. For me this was an advantage carrying quite a lot of shooting and a steam tank... Bring it on...

The draw of battles:

Well, I drew a local Wood Elves-player that had earlier expressed his fear playing a steam tank. Okay, I had some psychological advantage there...

Round 1:

Opponent: Steven.
Army: Wood Elves.
About the opponent: Well, he was a local player that I hadn't seen on any other Belgian event before so I guess I had some experience to my advantage. Also he had forgotten his free wood which gave a large part op open ground to be covered by my mortar, great canon, hellblaster and handgunners...
About the battle: In fact the only thing I had to do is send forward my knights, pistoleers and steam tank and shoot at any troops that tried to 'escape' by coming towards me. Well, I did a nice job at that with my hellbaster playing a major part in this. All he had afterwards were 6 or 7 glade guards and a spell singer... Result: Crushing Victory...
Most valuable unit(s):
  • The Hellblaster shooting all this in 4 rounds: 8 Waywatchers (Cover? Where?), A Highborn and a unit of Wardancers, a unit of Dryads with a Branchwraith and another unit of Dryads... Talking about the ultimate skirmisher killer...

Round 2:

Opponent: Jef Verhaert (De Witte Ridder)
Army: Tomb Kings.
About the opponent: I have played Jef once before... I believe it was at the Knights of Bayard tournament in 2004. He had massacred me there and I was eager to do better now... Jef is a fair player that really knows to use his undead troops and that I value greatly in the Dutch speaking Warhammer world...
About the battle: The battle was a capture scenario and Jef used his fast moving troops and casket (damn that thing) to keep away (and kill) my troops. At a certain moment I had to role several tests for my larger blocks and I all failed them which resulted in my troops running of the table... Typical. Last year exacty the same occured while playing him... In the end only my Steam Tank survived the annihilation with a loss by massacre as result. Again congrats Jef... but some day... ;-) Jef eventually won the tournament so in the end I had 'helped' him a little ;-)
Most valuable unit(s):
  • Hellblaster for killing a unit of chariots
  • Free Company detachment hitting of the last wound of a Bone Giant

Round 3:

Opponent: Kris Jans (De Witte Ridder)
Army: Beastmen
About the opponent: Kris was the winner of the last Knights of Bayard tournament and a great guy to play against. Just like me he had faced a strong opponent in the previous round and that's how he came up against me...
About the battle: Having 6 units in ambush really bothered me but as I had first turn I had the opportunity to hit some of his units already on the table before the ambush was sounded. After that it was looking to keep from being outmanoeuvred all the time. On both sides tests were failed and losses were counted but alas I failed most of my tests in round 5 with quiet some points running of the table. Luckily my opponent had a 'no guts, no glory'-kind of play which allowed me to get some extra victory points in his last round... A minor loss was a tough verdict on what we both considered a draw...
Most valuable unit(s):
  • Steamtank for destroying some chariots and scaring of some minotaurs
  • Swordsmen for killing a brayshaman and a beast herd in the last round
  • Shooting in the first 2 rounds...

Aftermath:

17th place. I believed I could have done better if I didn't fail that many tests in round 2 and 3 but hey it was a fun tournament with 3 great opponents... Until the next tournament...
