Up
Army of the Griffon

By The Chosen of Sigmar and Stefano

Prequel:

(by The Chosen of Sigmar)

As this was a tournament on a Sunday (so I didn't have to work) and I had enjaoyed myself last year I had enlisted me for the tournament of Goes again. As I was rather late I was placed as a reserve but I decided to make the trip anuway... and lucky me: one of the players didn't show up! As always the first thing we did upon arriving was chat a bit with the other players about the past tournaments and try to get a glimp on what they would be playing.

You can find the story about the armylist I used here.

The tables:

(by The Chosen of Sigmar)

Just like last year these hadn't too much cover in the center of the field but rather in the deployment zones which is always an advantage for shooting heavy of fast-and-hard hitting armies. I didn't know what to think but this could work for or against me...

The draw of battles:

I didn't know what to expect when I heard the name of my first adversary but as I approached the table I saw...

Round 1:

The Chosen of Sigmar's Opponent: Pascal Sampers.
Army: Vampire Counts.
About the opponent: I had never seen him on a tournament before and he was rather new to his own army. However he was a correct and understanding guy to play against who eventually ended third the tournament. I wouldn't mind a rematch.
About the battle: I was able to charge in turn 1 with my Elector Count on Griffon into a small unit of skeletons. A perfect shot on his Black Coach was ward saved in the first round. I had place my captain on Pegasus so he could charge the next turn in a flank of one of the other units but hadn't placed him out of the range of the Black Coach. I fled the charge but made it possible for the coach to overrun into my Elector Count, causing him to panic... As from that turn on I had only hope that my infantry would hold but when my unit holding the Griffon Banner ran also and caused panic on all other units, things seemed hopeless. As I didn't rally any of the units anymore and had but one unit in the game by turn 5 which was liable to be charged by 3 or 4 units anyway, I conseded the game...
Most valuable unit(s):
  • The only unit that really stood firm in combat where my newly painted Gryphon Legion. They scored some victory points by killing a small unit of bats and helding of a unit of zombies for a turn of two.
  • The huntsmen for destroying an outnumbering unit of Ghouls.

Stefano’s Opponent: Niek Vogels.
Army: Ogre kingdoms.
About the opponent: Niek is a veteran dutch tournament player, so he knows the rules, as well as a few nasty tricks …
About the battle: I was facing a unit of Rhinox Riders, two butchers, a tyrant, several units of Ogres and a bunch of gnoblars.  I deployed most of my army in the middle, so I could pull out some flank attacks if charged.
I planned to tackle the rhinox-attack by charging my zombies in their flank with a vanhel’s-spell.  Unfortunately for me, one Butcher used the Hellheart, meaning this magic turn all my spell rolls with double scores were both irresistible and miscast (on the ogre miscast table).  I didn’t want to loose my general from turn one, so I didn’t get my spells to work.  In the next turn, the Rhinox-unit smashed into the graveguards with my wight lord and necromancer general.  After attacks and combat result, only my general and wight lord were still standing, both with one wound.  Auch !!!
All other units in the neighborhood were also charged, so I couldn’t flank them soon.  Nevertheless, I charged my black knights in both his Ironguts units, and with some aid from my banshee, both his units were killed in the end.  Further, his general stayed beating my unit of skeleton spearmen, only to find himself fleeing in turn 4 after inflicting only one wound on my unprotected necromancer, and failing his breaktest.
Alas, the behemoth Ogre ran too far (and rallied the next turn), but my pursuing skeletons ended in the flank of the Rhinoxes.  I also tried to dispatch his butchers, but the beastly guys kept on surviving.  In the end, my general and wight lord were taken out of action by combat result, and my army started to crumble.  In the end, no dead man (and woman) was still standing … If only I could have charged the Rhinox-unit in turn one …
Most valuable unit(s):

  • Combo of black knights, banshee and fell bats for dispatching two units of Ironguts .

Round 2:

The Chosen of Sigmar's Opponent: Arjan De Volder.
Army: Dark Elves.
About the opponent: A real fun guy to play against. He came to amuse himself and maybe get a nice score but that didn't keep him from having a laugh.
About the battle: This capture scenario had to be mine. Using my fast moving troops to engage the enemy and my infantery to go for the objective. All went rather well as I was able to resist his 8 levels of magic without having too much testing. The helblaster shot 5 turns and didn't misfire ones. The casualties he did weren't that much though... And then that last round of Dark Elves Magic which made my unit spearmen in the flank of the Black Guard panic and run off so the Black Guard could beat the swordsmen in front of them and get a hold of the objective. Minor Victory for my opponent... Damn I was close!
Most valuable unit(s):
  • Pistoliers for getting rid of crossbow archers and reaper bolt thrower.
  • Gryphon Legion for killing a noble in chariot.

Note for my opponent: you can't cast Black Horror in close combat so you owe me a rematch! ;-)

Stefano’s Opponent: Brian Lys.
Army: Chaos army of Tzeench.
About the opponent: Brian is fun to play against, even though things were sometimes going tough for him.
About the battle:  Brian deployed four spellcasters (three on disc and one on deamonic mount), a hell canon, a chariot, a unit marauders and a unit of chaos warriors.  With only 29 models on the other side of the table, I was outnumbering him more then three times.  This would come in handy for the “capture”-scenario we were about to play ! In turn one, I was immediately bombarded by loads of spells, but somehow I only lost three bats.  In return, I moved full pace towards the objective.  The second turn, he again pulled the magical card, but again only few of my troopers were lost.  I again rushed forward, consolidating a nice position around the objective, only to find my grave guard with general and wight lord charged by the three disc-riding characters, and my skeletons on the right charged by the chariot and character on daemonic mount.  I managed to survive the first round of combat, and charged the hell canon and marauders with the bats and black knights respectively.  The bats lost the game, but the black knights nicely broke and overran the wild men.  And even more, my wight lord blew one character off his disk with a killing blow.  My banshee’s attempt to “enchant” his general failed, for all her “hits” were on the disc instead of the character.  Since discs are immune to psychology, it didn’ do any harm.
By this time, all grave guards fell, leaving my general and wight lord on their own.  Lucky for me, I maneuvered a skeleton unit into the flank of the two remaining disc riders, seeing both of them running away after combat.
His lord didn’t rally anymore, so that was that.
The biggest surprise was brought by the hell canon, blasting away one and a half skeleton unit with his Ichor Spew (teardrop template), although Brian didn’t like the repeated curse of years on his chaos warriors either.
After turn 4, time was up.  Killing two characters (including his general) and consolidating the objective without big losses granted me a solid victory.
Most valuable unit(s):

  • Wight lord for his killing blow on a hero on disc.

  • The skeletons for flank charging his general, resulting in him running off the table.

Round 3:

The Chosen of Sigmar's Opponent: Giel Put.
Army: Lizardmen.
About the opponent: Giel told me he plays every army except for Elves. He was a nice bloke to play against. Unlucky for him his dice didn't always do what he wanted. He kept on being a good sport and find the humour in things; Giel, better luck next time. Hope to play you again someday...
A
bout the battle: Again I used my fast movers as being the first wave of combat. My great Canon blasted away the Stegadon on the other site of the table. The Elector Count on Griffon got rid of a unit of kroxigors while his lieutenant on Pegasus did the same being it over more rounds. A wave of poisoned arrows had killed all my knights of the Griffon except for the first knight. I charged him into the swarms the next turn and he stayed there for the rest of the game, each time taking 1 too 3 wounds... The helblaster was able too blast 2 units of terradons away.  In the final round he charged his general and salamanders in my regiment of spearmen which luckily held their ground. In my last round I threw in the remains of my swordsmen in the flank and my elector count on griffon in the rear... The combat result caused both lizard-units to flee after which they were overrun...
Most valuable unit(s):
  • Helbaster for destroying two units of terradons.
  • My brave first knight for keeping those annoying swarms busy for the whole battle.
  • The great canon for killing the stegadon in round 1.
  • The Elector Count for destroying a unit of Kroxigors and being the judge in a multi-unit combat...
  • The Captain on Pegasus for dealing with the other unit of Kroxigors.

Stefano’s Opponent: Pieter Matthijs.
Army: Orcs and goblins.
About the opponent: I hope to encounter Pieter soon again, for our battle consisted entirely of fun and joy.  Thanks Pieter, for giving me the nicest battle ever in my entire tournament history !
A
bout the battle: Pieter drew up a “standard” Orcs and Goblin army, with loads of night goblins, orcs, chariots, spear chuckaz and wolf riders.  To my surprise, he brought along three shamans.
I again deployed again my infantry in the middle, and the knights and bats on the flanks.  I suspected some fanatics (in fact, I knew he had fanatics, for he told me before the tournament began ... ;o) ), so I only slowly approached in the centre.  I triggered the fanatics, which after their release partly ran through my and his units, and this for several turns.  So most of the time, the central units on both sides just stood and waited, hoping the fanatics would go away some time.  It was quite funny to find ourselves asking the other one if he was going to move in the centre, only to find a smile and a simple “nope, not today !” …
On the flanks, I dispatched the spearchucka’z, giving me two units in his hinterland.  His chariots reached my infantry one at the time, and they didn’t do enough damage so they ran.  His giant charged my zombies, and both units were busy with each other for the remainder of the battle.  In fact, it’s quite hilarious seeing a giant smashing only one zombie to pulp every combat, having to take a break test himself.
In the end (when all fanatics left the centre, swirling their way back and forth his and my line), I dared to charge his night goblins with my skeleton units, finding myself in the situation of pursuing the little green fellaz.  Hurray for invocation of nehek, winning one combat and causing fear !
We had so much fun, we only got to the 4th round.  I considered it a draw, but after headcount it was a minor victory for me (even close to a solid …)
Most valuable unit(s):

  • The threesome of necromancers, for pulling out the necessary spells when needed.

  • The entire army, for causing enough fear and winning enough combats.

Aftermath:

19th place for Stefano and 22th for the Chosen of Sigmar. If only the Chosen of Sigmar hadn't paniced in the last round of game two. That made a difference of more then 1200 points changing the minor loss into a solid victory. Unlucky dice rolling... Until the next tournament...
