By The Chosen of Sigmar and
Alexander Kosters
Prequel:
(By
Alexander)
I
was asked as a guest writer for the Money wolves, to
give my review and was glad to do so.
The tables:
(By
Alexander)
Some
tables had some good and nice scenery on it and some were more open to give each
contestant a good headache to face off against his opponents.
The draw of battles:
(By
Alexander)
My army consisted of
my trusted Empire general ( Godfried Feuerstahl ) on his trusted Griffon (
Grauwel ), a battle standard bearer on a barded warhorse, 2 Warrior priests on
barded warhorse. Two blocks of Knights, a handgunner unit. Two pistoliers units
and a steamtank. This was the first time I used this list. I did experiment for
a longer time with a more faster cavalry army and I must say I am very pleased
with it as it can give me the tactical use of the Empire units and the faster
move with the units. Especially the general on griffon.
Round 1:
Kaļo's
Opponent: Sjoerd Vermue (Fantusian Dragons).
Army:
Chaos Undivided.
About the opponent:
This guy is hilareous. If you have ever the opportunity of playing him, just
do it. Although we didn't both have to play 4 turns (I was on a roll) we had
fun to last for 15 battles of 6 rounds. Sjoerd, anytime, anyplace. I might
even let you win some time ;-)
About the battle: Like I said: I was on a roll. In turn one my steam
tank hull canon destroyed a chariot but was outbested by my great canon that
killed a giant with a single shot. The falling giant took 6 plague bearers
with him... From turn 2 onwards the battle was on almost anywhere on the
table to become decisive in turn 3 when everything but my canon was
fighting. Sjoerd had nowhere to go and was killed to the last man while I
only lost the unit of knights with the mounted warrior priest. A success...
Most valuable unit(s):
- Actually I can't name a single unit that didn't
make its points worth while. The knights that fled were... let's say...
expendable for the greater good!

Alexander's
Opponent:
Wim Bergisch.
Army:
Chaos with mark of Tzeentch.
About the opponent:
A very keen and good player where I hoped for a
rematch that I got.
About the battle:
:
The battle was very well played and with some very
lucky shots of my two pistolier units I was able to wound his dragon already
in the first turn. In the next turn I was able to kill it with the cannon
shot from my steam tank. This was a lot off points already taken. My knights
took a heavy hitting from his chosen knights which they withstood so that
the Griffon could attack from behind. My other knights where able to charge
his Giant but failed to do enough wounds thus getting into trouble and got
killed in the route. The handgunners did well to face o ff against some
knights and live to fight a second turn only to run fore their lives. With
the chosen knights and the dragon gone a lot of points were lost against
some knights from me and the pistolier units. I had a Minor Victory.
Most valuable unit(s):
-
The pistoliers fore shooting a
dragon almost to pieces.
-
The steamtank to finish the job
of killing the dragon.
-
Also the griffon as I could
counter other threats faster and bring more hitting power to bear after
the first round of combat.

Round 2:
Kaļo's Opponent: Bjorn Verpoorte (Olde Worlde).
Army:
Orcs & Goblins.
About the opponent:
I had seen Bjorn on two previous tournaments and knew he was always playing
for a good ranking. That didn't prevent us from having a fine game with on
both sides unexpectedly strange dice rolls and a some (well ment) curses
towards our respective Gods of war...
About the battle:
Again I was facing 4 spear chukka's and 2 doom divers. Knowing what had
happened in Brugge I was determined to get my steam tank as fast as possible
near enemy lines so at least terror would make a difference. He got first
round and I must say that I have seen quite a lot better shooting than
Bjorn's. Not a single wound! Hello, does large target ring a bell. So I
drove 15" forward, released 4 fanatics from 2 units and took ONE wound from
them. Terror didn't do a damn thing and next turn the wounds were coming in.
For the rest it was a tactical game with Bjorn repeatedly fleeing voluntary
(why not) and me taking the full load of bolts and flying goblins a.k.a.
doom divers. Eventually I lost most of my units to Bjorn where his 'safe
play' gave him the final advantage. But we had a nice battle and the victory
was well earned for Bjorn...
Most valuable unit(s):
- The Arch Lector for surviving...
- The Knights for taking at least two of Bjorns
units...

Alexander's
Opponent:
Bas van Oorschot (Fantusian Dragons).
Army:
Vampire Counts - Blood Dragon bloodline.
About the opponent:
A local guy witch I never had the pleasure of
playing. A nice and good opponent to fight against.
About the battle:
The battle started with all the wolves and knights
he had coming charging down on me. A nice misfire from my steamtank was
again a bad omen for me that things could go very wrong. After one of his
wolves had charged the tank I was not able to counter charge with my knight
unit as they failed there fear test!!!! I was able to counter some with my
pistoliers. He could charge with his vampire count into my steamtank and do
some more damage. On top of that with two times curse of years rolled it
became to much fore my knight units who started crumbling. This reduced my
hitting power as I was not able to dispel his spells. My handgunners and
remaining pistoliers did enough damage to one of his cavalry thus reducing
also his hitting power. After a round of combat and a outnumber of fear
causing enemy my other knights fled towards the table edge. The Empire
general then confronted the pursuing unit to face him in hand to hand
combat. A good and hard fought challenge did occur and destroyed his vampire
thrall. All in all a bitter fight but I was not able to kill his Vampire
count which is always a point sink. Result: a minor loss.
Most valuable unit(s):
-
The steamtank fore holding up
his Vampire count for some turns.
-
The Griffon to counter and to
have a good tactical use.
-
And the pistoliers for reducing
the hitting power of his knight blocks.

Round 3:
Kaļo's Opponent: Arvid De Coster (Olde Worlde)
Army:
Empire.
About the opponent:
'Mini-Me' as his friends call him is still a youngster but has a real good
feel for the game. He knows the strength and weaknesses of his army very
well but doesn't forget to have fun.
About the battle: I was facing a War Altar and a steam tank. The
difference was that my opponent went for a gunline approach with 2 units
handgunners and a unit outriders (each with hochland marksman) and 2 canons.
Result: two steamtanks that were disabled but not destroyed after turn 1. My
War Altar took several wounds before I could charge it in the handgunners
but I succeeded in ward saving 4 canonballs on it. When my pistoliers shot
away his outriders his handgunners fled through his entire gunline causing a
crew of a great canon to flee... This was the sign for my ArchLector and my
knights to charge in. My Arch lector overran the handgunners and was charged
by his war altar. Although I had but one wound on my Altar it survived and I
took a wound on my Arch Lector. In return I directed my Mace-attack at the
chariot and crushed it. A dead Arch Lector was the result and I overran in
the recently rallied handgunners. Another overran made me crush my chariot
in difficult terrain. In the last turn my swordsmen fled a charge from his
swordsmen hoping to rally in my last turn on another table quarter. However
Arvid casted Doom and Darkness on them and they failed to rally. My Arch
Lector char ged
his steam tank with only two wound left, wounded it but did only one wound.
Thus the steam tank claimed a table quarter and survived granting Arvid a
minor victory...
Most valuable unit(s):
- Pistoliers for blowing away the outriders and
making a unit of handgunners and a crew flee.
- Arch Lector on War Altar for surviving a lot of
shots and making his part of the victory points.
- Great Canon for destroying a great canon and
doing 8 wounds on the steam tank.

Alexander's
Opponent:
Chris 't Hart (Fantusian Dragons).
Army:
Vampire Counts - Blood Dragon bloodline.
About the opponent:
A young but friendly player who was not so
experienced but had the joy of playing. We had quiet some laughs.
About the battle:
As he had a lot of infantry on his left
flank I wanted to attack these with 2 units at once. The knights in the
front and the griffon on the flank. With a shot killing already one knight I
was happy for the first turn. He started to move his army forward and did
make the mistake I had hoped for. As it was my second turn I charged into
his skeleton unit with one of the knight units and the griffon on its flank
and so killing his vampire thrall in a instant! The pistoliers did some
shooting at the unit skeletons protecting his necromancer. I needed again to
stop the two 'curse of years'-spells he had rolled as early as possible! My
steamtank got stuck into his grave guard and killed enough of those animated
dead under his heavy wheels. My knights did fare a bit less as I had
accepted his challenge with my champion and got killed in a instant. I did
not enough casualties but was able to win the battle. In his turn he
screamed so loud with his banshee that too much knights, that were in the
fight with the vampire count, dropped dead from their horses. My other
knight unit did got stuck into another zombie unit that was whiped out in a
instant. But as I failed to do enough damage that the griffon fled and got
taken on the double 6 roll!! Taking my general was a heavy toll but the
fight was not fare from over. As the knights got stuck into the fight with
the necromancer unit and the steamtank taking the charge from the vampire
count. His remaining skeletons did then charge the handgunners witch did
flee because did forget to take the drummer boy with them. With his general
gone in the fight against the steamtank his army crumble what was left of
it. The only remaining was his banshee. So this went fore me with a solid
victory.
Most valuable unit(s):
-
The knights fore taking head on
the skeleton units.
-
The steamtank fore holding up
his flanking unit.
-
The griffon fore taking with his
flight move the flank of my opponent.

Aftermath by Alexander:
Well
I ended up place 15 witch was not a bad place at all reminding there was a lot
of the top ranking there. It was a very pleasant day in a very pleasant
atmosphere.
Aftermath by Kaļo:
I ended tenth. A nice result which I
didn't expect anymore after battle two. Both my lesser tournaments are now wiped
out and I'm even in the top 5 of the ranking. I also wanna thank Alexander for
the pictures of this tournament.
