By Kaļo
Prequel:
August is the month where the
two clubs I belong to both organize their tournament. As I had already judged in
the first (read Den Tom's report on Knights of
Bayard) I wanted to play this one. I chose to go with High Elves and had
composed a fun list to play. With some luck it would also do well.
The tables:
The tables were 60 by 48 inch and as always not
too much covered with scenery but enough to make a tactical difference. And that
difference is just what I need...
The draw of battles:
As
always I was curious what opponent I would have to face in the first round. And
I got in for a real challenge: Kris Jans playing Daemons of Chaos.
Round 1:
|
Kaļo's
Opponent: Kris Jans (De Witte Ridder)
Army:
Daemons of Chaos.
About
the opponent:
I really like playing
Kris. Mostly he has real hard hitting lists but as he is not the merciless
killer like some others in the ranking and a tactical challenge I love
plying him anytime wether I win or loose.
About
the battle:
The battle was strange. Kris
neutralized my magic phase but I had no problems with his either although he
was fielding a Tzeentch Daemon army. On the other hand his flamers and units
of furies dealed with my shooting and infantery units. I rolled poorly to
say the least. Out of 7 attacks of Dragon Princes on Bloodcrushers I did one
wound, which was saved by Kris. Needless to say my cavalry was cut away. I
tried to hide my White Lions with the Archmage in a forest but eventually
they were also destroyed. I didn't do much in return and Kris scored a
really heavy massacre against me...
Most
valuable unit(s):
- Actually, I can't even name one...

Round 2:
|
Kaļo's
Opponent: Patrick Cannaerts (De Witte Ridder).
Army:
Vampire Counts.
About
the opponent: Finally! Finally I got to play
Patric Cannaerts. Since I entered the ranking I have been looking forward to
play a couple of guys and Patrick is certainly one of them. It was a nice
battle and we really enjoyed ourselves. Definitely a player to meet again.
About
the battle:
Everything was going great. Magic and shooting
made casualties as I aligned my two infantry blocks and Dragon Princes to
make decisive charges. However my Swordmasters missed too many attacks to
completely wipe out a block of skellies whereas the dragon princes failed
their terror test when wanting to charge the cairn wraights with a banshee.
And then everything went wrong. The swordmasters were killed by the Vampire
Lord and his grave guard retinue. My faith was sealed because I didn't have
the units anymore to make the combined charges I needed to beat solid units
like those of Patrick. The most response to Patrick's superiority in models
was given by the White Lions whom stood to the last man against an
overwhelming number of undead. They stubbornly refused to fail the 8 or 9
leadership tests they had to take. Eventually Patrick took home a deserved
massacre.

Round 3:
|
Kaļo's
Opponent: Arne Sanders.
Army:
Vampire Counts.
About
the opponent:
What can I say? This young
lad plays Warhammer like a greedy person counts his money: a matter of life
and death. If you play like that you just bring down the fun for the other
players also. And that while playing on the 'last table'...
About
the battle:
Well actually everything seem to go well for me until his Vampire got into
combat in the last 2 rounds. The man was striking terrifyingly hard for my
troops carrying a sword of battle whie having infinite hatred and red fury.
Although I had taken quite a lot of him he still took a victory.

Aftermath:
I had
two fine opponents but had to end the tournament with a 'business-player' which
is never a nice way to end the day. That I didn't win, didn't bother me. It made
me make the decision not to play anymore in the Ranking this year as on club
level, there was still a lot of action to be taken. My ranking wasn't going to
be great this year so I knew my efforts would be more rewarding on the club.
Nevertheless I want to thank the Green Knight for their
greatly organised tournament. I will surely keep attending it.
