Up
Haarlem's Besiegers

By Kaļo

Prequel:

Haarlem was a tournament I hadn't attended before. In the past it had bothered me that I had to drive for 2 hours to the Netherlands in order to play a tournament. But now that a couple of fellow Knights of Bayard wanted to go I agreed to join them. Afterspending the night on the comfortable couch of a collegue Knight of Bayard and a more-than-2 hour drive we arrived in Haarlem. Beware, here we come...

The tables:

The tables were certainly big enough to play our battles on. The scenery was placed nicely and allowed tactical playing without giving to much advantage to certain armies. With my list (see below left) I would try to get a tactical benefit from this...

The draw of battles:

I hadn't really looked up front what kind of armies I could be facing but when 'the Dutch Big Guy' tapped my shoulder and asked if I was coming I knew I was in for a treat...

Round 1:

Kaļo's Opponent: Leo van Groot Battave. (De Witte Ridder)
Army: Lizardmen.
About the opponent: Like I said: the Dutch Big Guy but today I'd call him 'Stoffel' because that was on the shirt he borrowed from a fellow 'Witte Ridder'. Leo always tries to destabilize you with tricky remarks and jokes but this is a game in which I haven't been beaten yet. For every 'stone' he threw at me he got a immediate reply... :o)
They can say what they want but although we didn't get past turn 4 I really like playing Leonard because he's a tactical AND 'social' challenge!
About the battle: I was facing a Slann in a big unit of temple guard, two units of 15 sauri, two 'skink hordes' and some skirmishers. A skink priest and two Scar Veterans on Cold Ones finished the picture.
I chose to deploy between the rocks of the scenery and for three turns I tried to get rid of the Slann with my canons. The Slann each time got his 'Look Out, Sir' (this is surely one of the best changes in the new book for the Lizardmen) but in return the canons managed to kill all but three temple guards. At the left my Archlector got rid of one of the blocks of Sauri and kept the skinks on that side busy. Everything seemed to go fine until in his last turn Leo succeeded in scoring a lot of victory points by killing or wounding my three heroes, a canon and the knights. The result was a solid loss...

M
ost valuable unit(s):

  • The two great canons which succeeded in killing 18 of 21 temple guards. They didn't misfire once...
  • Archlector on War Altar for destroying a block of Sauri.

Round 2:

Kaļo's Opponent: Alex Follens (Conect'R).
Army: Lizardmen.
About the opponent: Alex is a kind and tactical challenging opponent. We didn't argue about lots of things. I had one little problem and that was that a low hill could blocked line of sight to large targets. Being both good sports we took a roll which was in my disadvantage. I really hope to encounter this young player again soon... for revenge :o)
About the battle: Facing another Slann accompanied by two Skin Priests and an Ancient Stegadon with an engine of the gods made me a little worried. A Scar Veteran, aunit Cold One Riders, some skinks, a nice bodyguard of Temple Guards and some terradons completed the picture. 'Steggie' remained behind the hills fearing my artillery while most of his army advanced. At a rather early stage my Archlector was able to overrun into the unit of the Slann and started killing everything in the area in the ensuing magic and combat phases. Although trying, Alex failed to dispel several of his bound prayers or the bound spell of the chariot. The helblaster was the other main killer killing 4 Cold One Riders, the Skink Priest on the stegadon and doing 4 wounds on the stegadon itself. These last wounds were a result of a misfire on the monster resulting in 30 hits. It deed one wound too short though because the monster succeeded in charging the Archlector on war altar who was alreadfy in challenge with the Slann. The impact hits took the last wound of the War Altar and my Archlector was now outnumbered by a terror causing creature. Because of the ongoing challenge he could not take the last wound of the Stegadon and was overrun. A cruel result for someone who had killed 28 models including 3 heroes. To their general's revenge the canon blew up the creature. Although Alex and I had the impression that I hadn't lost much while he had only half a Slann remaining the battle ended a draw.
Most valuable unit(s):

  • The Archlector on War Altar: 29 kills including 3 double wound heroes and a wound on both the Stegadon and the Slann. To bad he died.

  • The Pistoleers for surviving 7 impact hits of Terradons and disposing of the later.

Round 3:

Kaļo's Opponent: Maarten Van Wezemael (Conect'R).
Army: Chaos Mortals.
About the opponent: I had encountered at least twice before but then he played Dark Elves. I have to say he's better with his Druchii than with the minions of Chaos. But as always it proved to be a nice battle where my opponent didn't threw his dice as good as he would have wanted.
About the battle: With two pyramids and two swamps making a massive approach nearly impossible I could position my artillery in a matter that it would really wreak havoc in the midst of the Chaos Warriors. While my Archlector was charged by the Khorne urvivors of a Hellblaster volley the 3 Nurgle Wizards didn't want to get too close with their bodyguard of Slaanesh knights. No worries for me as my artillery continued to bring fire upon them and the Dragon Ogres on my left. These however got stuck in the mud when trying to charge my pisotleers. From there they didn't pose any thread anymore and my Flagellants were soon able to take their flank. In the mean time a Tzeentch Sorcerer that had survived a Hellblaster volley charged the crew of this warmachine. He killed a crew member but the other 2 held their nerve and didn't go down for two more rounds of combat. And then my Warrior Priest could come to their relief and challenge the Sorcerer. The will of Sigmar proved stronger than the one of the 4 Chaos gods and the Warrior Priest killed the sorcerer. This was the sign for crew of the Hellblaster and the other artillery to take aim at the three other sorcerers and their bodyguard for they simply didn't want to charge the Archlector who interposed of them charging into my infantry. The result was that with the exception of a unit marauders and a unit marauder horsemen none of the Chaos army survived. A crushing victory was the result.
Most valuable unit(s):

  • The hellblaster and its crew: they shot up more than 1000 points of Chaos knights and heroes and survived being in combat with a sorcerer on disc for 3 rounds of combat.

  • The archlector for getting rid of 4 Khorne Knights and remaining a threat for the Nurgle Wizards and their Slaanesh bodyguard.

Aftermath:

I ended on the nineth place of this tournament. The adversaries were great challenges and the battles were fun. A small point of bad comment for the organisation: even though a location for a tournament can be expensive, a tournament where 50 players pay 7€ of registration could do better than 4 plastic night goblin fanatics on a pedestal. There were also some discussions about the judging but that can be a matter of interpreting a language which is not our native language.
