Prequel:
War of the Beard is a
tournament I favour amongst the ranking tournaments. The club house of the Tin
Soldiers is a great scene for a tournament like this. To bad the bridge over the
'Ring' (No, not the river Kwaï) made several players turn around before showing
up but with 42 players and a great atmosphere we were in for another great day.
The tables:
The tables were of a standard
48"x48" size with strategically placed scenery. Actually this is how we like it
most so we need to make the tactical choice as we choose table side.
The draw of battles:
I
was pleasantly surprised that
amongst the familiar faces I got a adversary I hadn't played before. He was...
Round 1:
|
Kaïo's
Opponent:
Karel 'Charel' Godet.
Army:
Dark Elves.
About
the opponent: Karl is a very nice opponent to face. All possible rule
'issues' (did we have any?) were settled in a nice and fair manner.
Certainly a player I liked to face again.
About
the battle:
I had counted on my magic and
artillery to make the difference. That was without counting my own artillery
dice and the ring of Hotek at the finger of the captain of the black guard.
All non-self destructing artillery tried to get the Hydra down but didn't
succeed in this due to lots of misfires. Luckily for me I could take some
points and when I was glad I could charge my flagellants into a unit of
corsairs I thought I could take some points. That was without counting the
assassin who promptly killed 6 of my crazed dudes. With the corsairs baring a
frenzy making standard the flagellants were cut down to the last man. Karl
took home a deserved minor victory.
Most
valuable unit(s):
- Crossbow detachments for shooting away some
repater crossbowmen.
- Wizard Lord for taking two wounds of the
dreadlord.

Round 2:

Kaïo's
Opponent: Thomas Chaineux.
Army:
Dark Elves.
About
the opponent: Most of
our Frenchspeaking 'collegues' do not even try to make themselves
understandable in another tongue than the one of Molière. Not Thomas! He
spoke English fluently and if he couldn't find the words I knew it in
French. No troubles there. As a player I must say he's a truly kind opponent
and although at a certain moment he beat the crap out of me (on the battle
field) I really enjoyed playing him.
About
the battle:
The carefully deployed ring of Hotek again messed up most of my magic plans
but this time my canons (with some delay) did what they had to do: kill the
dragon and the War Hydra. Nice points for me but my opponent's mobile troops
then got rid of the war machines. When his black guards and dread lord got
in the combat they easily made the difference. The Black Guard being able to
re-roll all hits makes them actually very, very, very hard. I suffered a
crushing defeat. Not a very good day for me to meet Dark Elves I guess...

Round 3:

Kaïo's
Opponent: Steven Daemers (Knights of Bayard).
Army:
Chaos Daemons.
About
the opponent:
'Da big dude' from Dendermonde. As a collegue
Knight of Bayard I've played Steven's Daemons once before with my
Empire. Then I won, this time it would be more difficult... Anyway it's
always fun to play Steven as he likes laughing even more than playing
Warhammer.
About
the battle: Afraid of my artillery and potential magic Steven chose to
deploy in kind of a refused flank with most of his hard hitting troops. The
real threat for my troops were the three hard hitting units flesh hounds
which I failed to get rid of. Steven kept throwing 5's and 6's when he was
saving these. With combined charges he got stuck into combat with them while
the screamers shot away the Flagellants and some of my war machine crew
members. I was throwing terribly and knew that I was going to get beaten
really big. But not without taking out the Bloodthirster with my Wizard Lord
wearing that small mirror that makes challenges so much fun... Thanks to my
bad dice throwing and Steven not making any tactical errors (except the
bloodthirster) he scored a crushing victory.

Aftermath:
I
ended in the rear of the tournament ranking. Not a really good result and I
wasn't to impressed of the performance of the Wizard Lord in my army either. If
you can block his accuracy with a stupid ring of 25 points then he isn't worth
considering in a 2000 points army. I might however consider taking another lord
however in the future that can make a valid alternative for my Archlector and so
I consider taking an Elector Count or Grandmaster in a next tournament. The
first can be mounted on a Griffon and the terror causing effect might be a nice
change... Maybe an option for Brugge. Oh what the heck, we'll see...
Above all I'd like to thanks our
friends of the Tin Soldiers for a very nice tournament. I certainly hope I can
attend future Wars of the Beard...
