How I started Warhammer

It must have been 1994, 1995. In a store in Tienen I saw for the first time a game called "Ridderstrijd". On the back of the box you could see examples of painted models and it was in seeing these I knew I had to have this game. The game itself was tactical: You had several units to field on a plastic sheet and you could move using cards on which a unit (or some units) was displayed. For fighting you had dice showing skulls or shields. I oriented myself more to the painting at first but occasionally played a game with a friend. For painting I used model paints.

Beginning to work in march 1995 I didn't make much time anymore for painting having a kid (not that I blame him), being a coach for a soccer team and having moved twice in a five year period.

After the birth of my second son I started to make time again in painting the models for the game. I spend lots of time in doing this. In December 1999 I discovered another game in a store: Warhammer. The models were more or less of the same standard (afterwards I came to know that the model of the first game were in fact the same models in the 4th and 5th edition of Warhammer) but were individually based, making it more interesting for me. My wife bought me the box for Christmas. My first intention was to paint them and use them for diorama's but as I bought more and more I started to look more at the rules not spending to much time at painting anymore. The models were put together as they were bought, but the urge to paint them was not always there.

In the store where I bought my things there was a gaming event every month. When this was pointed out to me I wanted to try my luck and so I played my first game in January 2002. I loved every minute of it. Here I first spoke Kurt (little did I know what had to come later) who showed of his Dwarfs. It reassured me a bit as I was thinking that I was a little bit old (about 10 to 12 years old) compared to the others.

A month later I met Ian, who had organized a little tournament in the store. He seemed to know a great deal of the rules and so I asked him to play sometime. In fact we became good friends. One day Ian told me of 2 friends of his who were coming over to play. He asked me to be his ally in this battle so that they could play 2 versus 2. I gladly accepted and found out that the others were Kurt (who I had met before) and Steven. We had a lot of fun and I found myself at ease with these 3 guys. I was accepted by the Money Wolves.

After my unfortunate divorce I started to paint some more in order to kill the time. I'm member of two Belgian Warhammer Clubs and together with The Money Wolves this takes a very big deal of my free time. Also I entered the 'Ranking der Nederlanden' and I'm a regular player on the tournaments. I also started this web site on the 31st of December of 2002 and since then it has been constantly growing.  As long as I keep having fun, I'll keep Warhammer-ing.
